You may have caught a post during the summer – a challenge post from Matalan. I was given £50 to spend in the Matalan Holiday Collection and had to choose something for a busy mum to wear on a beach holiday.
Well, after a little technical hitch along the way, the winner has been announced…silverbrogues!
So a big thank-you to all who voted – you can read a little more about silverbrogues and the challenge here. And of course a big thank-you to Matalan!
So here at silverbrogues, you may have guessed that I love a challenge. However, you may not be aware that I am extremely indecisive – I don’t see this as a negative – it’s always good to have options!
I was recently invited to take part, along with three other fashion bloggers, in the Matalan Style Project. Firstly, as my little blog is inspired by my Silver Brogues bought from Matalan, how could I refuse?! But also, a challenge, okay then!!
So, what exactly did it involve? I had a grand total of £50 to spend in Matalan, focusing on the Holiday Collection. The theme was ‘Busy Mums on a family beach holiday’ and there is a chance to win £50 in Matalan vouchers, bonus!
Now I began writing by saying how indecisive I am, and after spending over £200 and approximately 2 hours in Matalan, I came home with a few options! I narrowed them down to my three favourites – what do you think?
First up, from the beach, to wandering around the local tourist attractions, and on to dinner. Depending on accessories, this outfit could do all three.
Maxi Dress with rope detail on shoulders and waist (Available instore reduced to £10, not currently available online)
Papaya Denim Gilet (Available instore £16, not currently available online)
Canvas Pumps £14
Fedora Hat with Charm Detail £6
Again, I think this outfit is practical for a range of holiday activities. I have added wedges to glam it up a little!
And so to the final choice. I felt this outfit matched the brief best. I know as a busy mum, in this hot sunny weather, this would be the handiest for me. I have included a plain black bikini (see below) – the strap detaches from the top, and the bottoms can be folded down to whatever height is comfortable for you – no tan lines here!
Colour Block Twisted Bandeau Bikini Top Available instore £5, not currently available online)
Bikini Mini Briefs £5
Of course, there had to be some neon in my final outfit! This vest top is a great length, long enough to wear hanging down (just below your hips) or wear knotted for a shorter length. The skirt is perfect for the beach – it is very light fabric and has a slit up the side to make it more breathable. I have teamed it with a canvas bag and jelly sandals. I don’t wear a lot of jewellery when in the sunshine so I have just added a simple crystal bracelet. All items are easy to put on and take off, can be worn individually or together, and can be stuffed into the canvas bag in a rush and still look presentable! This hat has been my accessory every day in this sunshine:)
And here I am, ready for my holiday…
Feel free to nip on over to Matalan Style Project and if you love the look, get voting! Thanks;)
The last few days have seen me wearing denim shorts, denim shorts, oh and actually another day of denim shorts! This sun has been bliss, and so unusual for the Northern Irish school holidays, that I am literally stuck to my back garden just enjoying being outside in some heat!
And here are the denim shorts I have been wearing…
Topshop – bought second hand from the Fashion Souk £3!
Love this alternative from Internationale (similar to ones tried on during my budget challenge).
But what to wear with my shorts…
For one with a little chest, this is the perfect shape! I always love a Biba print.
To throw over the bikini top…
Embroidered Strappy Suntop £22 Topshop
Metallic Shell Top £14 Next
I love the sequin embellishment on the neckline of this kaftan.
Or add a floaty, open shirt – the sleeves and hemline are so relaxed in this shirt it can be worn casual or dressy.
Essential Rhinestoned Chiffon Shirt £16.75 Forever 21
Or to nip out to the shops…
Hollyanna Sleeveless T-shirt Dress in Vertical Square £35 Motel
And for the cooler evenings…
Annie Oversized Vintage Jumper (also available in blue, coral, grey and jade) £15 Boohoo
And now to the footwear…
I know I ‘loved’ a lot in my last post, but I LOVE these!
Sam Edelman Ginger Gladiator Sandals (prices and styles vary)
Happy sun days!
My real job has been a bit busy recently (no end of term calm down unfortunately!) so my last post (A White T-Shirt), and this post had to be an easy write for me – my favourite wardrobe staples!
And tonight, it’s the silver pump. I love silver. It’s a colour that goes with everything and is most flattering to my skin tone and most of the colours I wear. And doesn’t every girl love sparkles?!
Any regular readers will know I already own my favourite pair..
Next Embellished Ballerinas £26
*also available in black or nude
Of course, my Silver Brogues are also a firm favourite, but they are not always easy to match up with an outfit, especially in summer, as having thick glitter and a black sole, they are a little heavy.
Matalan Brogues – inspiration for silverbrogues!
I also own about 5 other pairs from various shops and in various styles (round toe, pointy toe, sling back, elastic detailing etc.), as seen in previous outfit posts.
For the wear my silver shoes get, I’m definitely in need of a new pair. So here are the choices…

I have a really bad habit which I have mentioned before – I buy a new item of clothing and suddenly this is the only thing I want to wear, so I have attempted to mix it up as best as possible, creating a few different looks. I am a lover of the white t-shirt – it’s so versatile and can be worn dressy or casual – a favourite quality of mine when I’m purchasing a new item of clothing.
Showcasing the white t-shirt as worn in the last few days…
